SELF CATERING IN HIGHLAND PERTHSHIRE - SCOTLAND
Location & Directions
The initial Strath through which the silvery River Tay flows from its Loch Tay source, is one of the most beautiful in the whole of Perthshire. Perhaps for this reason the south facing side of the Strath was historically occupied by a series of major estates. Each of these owned a stretch of the river, adjacent to a substantial mansion house and stables, above which would be a home farm and further up the slopes would be a hill farm. Higher still their land extended to grouse moors, red deer herds and perhaps a trout loch or two.
Ballinduin House and Bothy was once the home farm property of one such estate known as Cloichfoldich situated pretty well half way along the Strath at a height of 600 feet above sea level, overlooking the trees and the pastures through which the River Tay winds its way.
To find Ballinduin Bothy, it is most likely that you will be travelling north or south on the A9, in which case the following directions apply :-
~ Leave the A9 at Ballinluig junction, taking the A827 towards Aberfeldy.
~ Follow the A827 for 5 miles into Grandtully village, ( having ignored a sign to
Pitnacree/Strathtay on the way).
~ In Grandtully, just before "The Inn on the Tay", turn right and cross
an iron bridge over the River Tay.
~ Once across the bridge, continue straight on up the hill to a T – junction with
Strathtay Stores, (Spar Shop), on your left hand side.
~ Turn left at the T - junction heading towards Weem and follow that road for
about 0.8 of a mile.
~ You will then just have passed a road sign warning of a bad bend and narrow
bridge.
~ Immediately before that corner and bridge you will see a “Ballinduin” house sign
on the right hand side, at the foot of a narrow road leading up through trees.
~ Turn right up that narrow road.
~ As you emerge from the trees you will see another “Ballinduin” house sign
directing you left around a field bringing you to a wooden bridge.
~ Continue on uphill, past one house entrance on the right and as the road levels
out you will fork right, with a further “Ballinduin” house sign guiding you up the
final climb into our courtyard.
~ The total distance up the narrow road is only 0.5 of a mile.
Those travelling from the Aberfeldy direction should take the A827 out of the town heading to Grandtully where they will turn left, immediately after passing "The Inn on the Tay" and cross an iron bridge over the River Tay. Thereafter follow the above subsequent directions.
